Aerobic Table Tennis is a British company that wants clubs from all around the world to join in their mission to increase females playing the sport. Aerobic Table Tennis was launched two years ago when UK coach Steve Rowe conducted a survey throughout schools asking what type of physical activity girls would want to do. The results showed that they like to exercise by doing aerobics primarily because it includes music. Steve then devised a fitness programme that girls and women will enjoy whilst learning table tennis.
Aerobic Table Tennis allows girls to execute strokes to the beat of the music, which creates good rhythm – an important part of table tennis. In August 2012 Aerobic TT was launched on the island of Malta and over 3,000 girls took part in the sessions. The project is run by Joe Borg Cardona, the president of Malta TT Association, and owner of The Malta International Table Tennis Centre in Tarxien. Aerobic TT is for all ages. What table tennis shots can you expect to see if you take part in a workout? Forehand drive, forehand push, backhand drive, and backhand push are the basic strokes. If you enjoy this and want to progress, join your local table tennis club. Fun, fitness and a way to make more people play ping pong – perfect!! Even though Aerobic TT is primarily a female project, boys are welcome and frequently join in.
Having spoken with Aerobic Table Tennis, we hope to join forces, stage an event in the US and get more girls and women playing table tennis. If your school is interested please visit their website and register your interest. Have you tried out Aerobic Table Tennis?
