Over the last few days I have had several friends post the viral Bruce Lee playing ping pong with nunchucks video on my Facebook timeline. The frequency of posts would suggest this is a new advertising campaign but the video has actually been around since 2008. Strangely, Nokia’s N96-model phone is the product being flogged to dazed viewers. The cool thing about the video is that it is shot in black and white and makes people think that Bruce Lee is actually connecting with the ping pong balls. He is not. CGI wins in this epic battle.
Chinese ad agency JWT Beijing created the retro footage, but used special effects for authenticity. The video had 700,000 views on YouTube in 24 hours. Exposure that a lot of companies couldn’t even buy. It currently has over 6 million views. Unlike so many ping pong videos that portray the players as awkward nerds with no social skills, the Bruce Lee viral is timeless and uber cool.
