Marty Reisman was a legend. He was also the first ping pong hustler. He fought to keep hardbat style a prominent form of table tennis when the whole world had discovered high grade rubber. This meant you didn’t have to be skillful but instead allowed you to rely on the surface to deceive your opponent. Luckily, by this stage Reisman had already made his name and become World Champion. He took his trade and sandpaper paddle to New York where he opened his own club (Reisman’s table tennis). This short film, directed by Andrew Fried, was made in 2006 and offers a great introduction to one of the true characters of our time – the self-proclaimed ping pong hustler, Marty Reisman.
