We have all been there, those long days sitting around at our desk just waiting for that creative gene to kick in. It’ll come after posting some memes on slack or maybe after the hour long lunch break with colleagues right? Truth is, it usually doesn’t come when you wait around for it. But fret not, there is a solution that can help you “bounce” back and get those creative juices flowing.

Everyone has faced a creative block at some point in life. In situations like these, sometimes the best thing to do is to distract your mind from the task at hand in order to see things to feel refreshed and relieve the monotony of work.

Walking around and taking your eyes off the computer screen is one way, but it is not the most rewarding. Sitting in the cafeteria or common room is another way, but it is similarly unproductive. What you need is something that engages the body and brain, helps promote quick thinking and reactions, and stimulates the mind and body to boot.

And you can do all that by playing a game of ping pong! A study was completed by multiple British Universities in 1997, establishing that both mood and creativity are enhanced by physical activity.

Dr. Daniel Amen, a renowned member of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, points out that ping pong is not only highly aerobic, it’s also the best sport for your brain. He also goes on to state that table tennis can help with the following:

  • Increases concentration and alertness
  • Stimulates brain function
  • Develops tactical thinking skills
  • Develops hand / eye coordination
  • Provides aerobic exercise
  • Provides social and recreational interaction

  1. Creates Happy “Out of Box Thinkers”- Ping pong is proven to stimulate brain function and endorphins. Both of these are key to the creativity process.
  2. Social Interaction – Ping pong is mainly played with an opponent; which is a great opportunity to socialize and engage in friendly competition and the sharing ideas with a colleague.
  3. Office Morale – Since competing and winning raises morale, the addition of a ping pong table inside an office will help develop a sense of healthy competition, which will act as an added impetus to perform better, and therefore be more creative.
  4. Stress Reduction – Workplace stress reduction requires a measure of physical activity, to take the mind off the work at hand, and indulge in it producing bodily movement. The physiological upheaval results in the mind becoming more creative when work is resumed, since it is exerting in a completely different direction.

You still might be thinking that “it’s loud” or “too distracting” and it may be, but is there a better way to sharpen your brain, interact with your co-workers, create a happy work environment, increase creativity and “out of the box” thinking and promote physical activity (who really doesn’t want to lose a few calories) all at once? Do yourself and your Co-workers a favor and get a ping pong tableand break out those mad skills. Before you know you your whole team will be sporting custom paddles at the company wide tournament.
