Welcome to the Uberpong 2013 review. A lot has happened in the last year. We received some great press after launching our website on Uberpong.com and got our TV debut when we appeared on EXTRA TV. We created custom ping pong paddles for Mario Lopez and Maria Menounos and printed their faces on the rubber.
We had our official launch party at Frank in Austin, Texas in March. Dubbed “The Red & Black Rebellion“, the event was the first of its kind. No-one could play with paddles with red and black rubber. We created a level playing field by allowing everyone to use Uberpong paddles and in doing so, brought some much needed style to the game. The event attracted 300 people on a Sunday night and was talked about long after the trophies had been awarded. Shortly after the event, we were asked to bring the ping pong to a SXSW event run by fellow Austin startup MyTennisLessons called “Tennis and Tunes”. The event was another success despite the tough competition from the hundreds of other events.
In April, we got our first newspaper feature. The Austin American-Statesman wrote a piece entitled “Austin Company Makes Ping-Pong Paddles Stylish”. In the same month, we had our debut interview on TV when Jess Mitchell interviewed Uberpong Founder/CEO David Lowe on Your News Now (YNN).
In June, we staged our new Uberpongbat event at Easy Tiger in downtown Austin. Combining fighting video games with ping pong was another first and the event was a success attracting close to 300 people on a Sunday night.
In July, Uberpong partnered with UK lottery funded initiative Ping! Table tennis fans submitted their artwork and designs to the “Design Your Own Bat” competition and 11 winners were chosen.
In August, Uberpong were asked to create some custom table tennis rackets for Nike. The world’s biggest sports brand staged a pre-US Open tennis event in New York City with Rafael Nadal and lots of table tennis tables. Of course, the event was not complete without the cool green custom paddles we created! In the same month, we launched our first Austin social ping pong league which was an instant hit. The Austin American-Statesman featured us again as the event of the week. The venue was the best live music venue in Austin – The Parish.
In September, the Uberpong team flew out to San Francisco to direct the KIPP Ping Pong Smackdown. With 1000 attendees, MC Hammer, Kim Gilbert, Adam Bobrow warming the crowd and the top Silicon Valley startups playing, it turned out to be the most successful charity ping pong tournament ever. Our tournament management software and interactive social media stream wowed everyone who was there and we came back to Austin glowing! At the end of the month, the USATT (United States of America Table Tennis) interviewed David Lowe about how Uberpong is changing the face of table tennis one paddle at a time.
In October, a video submitted by one of our community members Quinn Vu was picked up by Cheezburger.com and got 50,000 hits in a few days. Check it out here. In the same month, Uberpong got its first magazine cover on The Austin Phoenix. We are big fans of the magazine which highlights Austin startups with remarkable ideas.
November marked Uberpong’s first birthday. Within a year, Uberpong has created custom paddles for Coca-Cola, Nike, MTV, National Geographic, Levi’s and made celebrity paddles for Ryan Seacrest, Mario Lopez, Maria Menounos, Lady Antebellum and Terrell Owens amongst many others. We would like to thank our customers, clients and fans for a truly memorable 2013.
What’s in store for 2014? A new website, new designs from the world’s best graphic designers, new online tools which will amaze you and much, much more. Happy New Year!
